Founded in 2005, the Jeffrey E. Smith Institute of Real Estate and Capital Markets operates within the Department of Finance of the Robert J. Trulaske, Sr. College of Business. Its mission is to provide educational opportunity in real estate to students of the Trulaske College and to members of the professional real estate and finance community.
In conjunction with the institute, JES Holdings hosts several events throughout the year in support of the students and their continued education.
University of Missouri Investment Group
The University of Missouri Investment Group (UMIG) is a student-run organization that educates, trains and places Mizzou students in high-finance jobs. UMIG is sponsored by the Jeffrey E. Smith Institute of Real Estate & Capital Markets. The Institute funds many of the group’s activities, including trips and Wall Street Prep courses, in an effort to help these highly motivated students find internships and full time positions in the investment banking industry.
“The University of Missouri Investment Group has been without a doubt the single most influential organization on my collegiate and professional career. I was introduced to the group as a freshman and can confidently attest that I have learned more about the world of business through UMIG than the majority of my classes. Through the group, I have met people that will be inside my professional network for the entire course of my career, traveled to New York City and Chicago to build relationships with recruiters and companies, and have learned skills that simply cannot be taught inside a classroom. All of this has only been possible through the incredible generosity and support of the Smith Institute and JES Holdings. I cannot begin to fully express the positive impact UMIG has made on me and many others in the Mizzou community. There is no doubt in my mind that the Investment Group has changed my life for the better.
We cannot thank the Smith Institute and JES Holdings enough for their tremendous support.”
– Ben Daniel, Vice President of UMIG
Trends in Real Estate & Capital Markets Forum
One of the pillars of the Jeffrey E. Smith Institute of Real Estate and Capital Markets is to provide educational opportunities in real estate and finance to students of the Robert J. Trulaske Sr. College of Business. The institute firmly believes that while instructional lessons are important, the first hand experiences outside of the classroom can go beyond helping students long after graduation.
The annual Trends in Real Estate & Capital Markets Forum was created to achieve this vision. The Forum is an educational conference hosted by the University of Missouri’s Trulaske College of Business and sponsored by JES Holdings, LLC. The mission of the Forum is to create the very best environment and opportunities for students of the university to meet and interact with business professionals and leaders from the real estate community. This experience will give the students a more hands-on understanding of how the industry functions and also the opportunity to receive practical knowledge not found in textbooks.
The 2018 Trends in Real Estate & Capital Markets Forum was held in Columbia, Missouri at the Reynolds Alumni Center on November 12, 2018. The event started with lunch at 11:45 a.m. and included many opportunities to hear from industry professionals, including our keynote speaker Lee Fixel, Partner, Tiger Global Management.
Jeffrey E. Smith believes in fostering the real estate and finance entrepreneurs of tomorrow. On November 6, 2017 at the Trends in Real Estate & Capital Markets Forum, JES Holdings hosted its first Stock Case Competition event at the University of Missouri. The Stock Case Competition invited entrepreneurial student teams to compete by choosing a company impacted by Amazon and presenting a comprehensive case for how the company should respond to the threat.
The 2018 Stock Case Competition focused on the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Students chose a company impacted by this new tax law and presented a comprehensive case for how the company could repatriate their excess cash overseas and invest it domestically to maximize shareholder value. Members of the University of Missouri faculty acted as qualifying judges. The judges evaluated all submissions and selected the top teams. The most innovative finalists presented to judges in front of a live audience of business professionals, professors and most importantly, their peers at Trends in Real Estate & Capital Markets Forum for a $3,000 cash prize.
