Summer Air Conditioner Tip

Summer is around the corner, and if you have a vacant unit, you may be tempted to turn the air conditioner completely off to save energy costs. That may not be such a good idea. The air conditioning system not only cools the apartment unit, but it also removes humidity.  In climates like the South and the Midwest, that is an important function in the summer. High humidity can lead to mold, mildew, musty smells, odors and warping wood. High humidity also attracts bugs!  Instead of turning the air conditioning system off, set the temperature seven to ten degrees higher than normal. The system will run less frequently while keeping humidity in the apartment at a reasonable level. You may also want to encourage residents to do the same as they head out on vacations during the summer. Hot apartment units can cause food in the pantry to spoil more quickly and can also place additional stress on the refrigerator/freezer.
