On Monday, November 12, 2018, the 11th annual Trends in Real Estate & Capital Markets Forum, hosted by the University of Missouri Trulaske College of Business and the Jeffrey E. Smith Institute of Real Estate and Capital Markets, took place at the University of Missouri. More than 500 students and business professionals joined together to enjoy lunch, a keynote presentation and final presentations for the student Stock Case Competition.

The day started with a morning presentation for the students by Larry Swedroe of Buckingham Strategic Wealth. Following the presentation, students made their way to join business professionals from the community for a luncheon in which they heard from both Andy Kern, the Director of the Institute, and David Steelman, Chairman of the University of Missouri Board of Curators.

Lee Fixel, Partner at Tiger Global Management, L.L.C., gave the day’s keynote presentation. Fixel has led his firm’s investments in Facebook, LinkedIn, Spotify, MercadoLibre, Flipkart, Warby Parker, Harry’s and Peloton. Needless to say, the audience of students and business professionals in attendance at the Forum enjoyed listening to Fixel speak about his experiences in the industry.

This year’s case competition focused on the 2017 Tax Cuts and Job Acts, which created major changes to the practice of taxing U.S. companies when they repatriate foreign profits. The three qualifying teams each picked a company impacted by this Act and presented in front of judges Elliott Bross, Lee Fixel and Walker Smith.

The winning team took home a prize of $3,000 for their analysis on the impact this act has had on Amazon.

Thank you to all our sponsors who made this event a success!
